The story also involves a young actress, a murdered man, a descent into alcoholism, and a rocky marriage - a story that almost mirrors events in the lives of the author and his wife Zelda, including a scene where the main character is beaten by the police.
Although reception for Tender Is the Night was not entirely enthusiastic, Fitzgerald thought it was his best work, and indeed, since it was published, appreciation for it has grown greatly.
